There are numerous programs, information, and support for trauma and burn survivors and family members.

Burn Camp for Children
A special week designed for children who have survived a burn injury. Recovery from a burn is a life-long
journey that requires dealing with many difficult physical, emotional, and psychological issues such as
peer- and self-acceptance. Burn camp offers a safe, nurturing, and fun environment to share emotions
and stories with other kids who have experienced similar injuries. Contact the Trauma Burn Center for
more details on this free opportunity.

Burn Injury Awareness Events
Burn survivors, family members, fire fighters, and medical professionals are welcome to attend! Workshop topics include injury recovery, healing, and sharing stories. Also, come celebrate together at the annual picnic reunion! Enjoy the many fun activities for all ages.

Customized Injury Prevention and Outreach Education Available
Upon request, we also provide educational programs to schools, senior citizens, medical professionals,
first responders, youth programs, firefighters, and other groups in our community. To request a

Great Lakes Regional Safety Summit
The Great Lakes Regional Safety Summit is a 1.5 day educational workshop for fire service, fire prevention, safety, and educational professionals. 2019 topics include: Great Lakes Data and National Fire Problem; NFPA 1300 (Community Risk Assessment and Community Risk Reduction Plan Development); How Public Education Supports Community Risk Reduction; Stocking Your Toolkit and Creating a “Public Education Experience”; Trending Issues; Relationships with Media; NFPA 3000 (Active Shooter/Hostile Event Response Program); Best Practices and More!

Leland Gayheart Prevention Award
As a tribute to a firefighter who lost his life to a burn injury, the Leland Gayheart Prevention Award was
created to encourage prevention programs within local fire departments. An honorarium is awarded
annually to fire departments whose innovative efforts have demonstrated a statewide, countywide, or
citywide impact on fire safety and prevention. This award is presented in joint effort by the Gayheart
family and the University of Michigan Trauma Burn Center

Michigan Fire Inspectors Burn Society Scholarship
Michigan Fire Inspectors are honored to present up to two survivors, one male and one female with a scholarship.
Applicants may submit their application online at www.mfis.org.

Older Adult Fall and Burn Injury Prevention
Older adults are at higher risk for burn and trauma injuries. Common causes of burn injuries are from cooking, bathing, drinking hot beverages, and eating. Traumatic injuries commonly occur in older adults from falls and car crashes. Contact us about available prevention education classes.

Pamela Pucci Service Award
Established in 2013, this award is given annually to a person that exemplifies Pam's passion, commitment, dedication, and service to the Trauma Burn Center.

Returning to Education and Continued Healing (REACH)
This school reintegration program provides information and tools necessary for parents, school
personnel, and health professionals to positively support a child returning to their school and community
after a serious illness or burn injury. This no-cost web-based tool features self-learning modules, video
clips, testimonials, handouts and more.
Safe Driving
Sarah Grundy Burn Educational Gift Fund
The Sarah Grundy Scholarship Fund enables burn survivors and their families to attend supportive educational programs to help with their recovery, such as the Phoenix Society's World Burn Congress and the Trauma Burn Center's Burn Survivor Education and Support Workshop.

Sean’s Story
A National Youth Firesetting Prevention and Intervention Toolkit. Fire misuse behaviors (firesetting, arson, playing with lighters, experimenting with bottle bombs, igniting aerosols, etc.) are associated with devastating costs, injuries, and life-changing consequences. This unique intervention tool enables community educators to lead discussions on methods to halt fire misuse behaviors and is available at no cost to fire departments, police departments, schools, social service agencies, juvenile courts, hospitals, and other JFSI specialists.

State of Michigan Burn Coordinating Center
Designated as the State Burn Coordinating Center for Michigan, the Trauma Burn Center is responsible
for training first responders and medical personnel throughout the state to properly respond to
catastrophic burn-related events and injuries. This training ensures that a highly-coordinated response is
executed in Michigan and its surrounding region for burn mass casualty incidents.
